Race Report Round 4 MCO Calabogie July 24-25th - TQLA President Chris Haley

The MCO Ted Powell Memorial weekend is now history and we got through it all with no rain to speak of!!  It tried to rain a little Saturday evening but failed.  Now as for the humidity on Friday and SaturdayÖ  We had 4 cars on hand for the weekend, Jim, Bob, Graham & Richard with everyone heading out for qualifying about 11:15 am with a practice session prior to that.  The qualifying order (in F4) ended up as Jim, Bob, Richard & Graham.  There were a total of 14 cars in the Libre race this weekend with the Radical sports racer group from Ottawa there, and a couple of formula cars from Quebec.  The short course was used as there were not enough licensed marshals available to use the long course.

Race 1 (Sat)

It was already very hot and humid when we went out at about 1:20 and at the drop of the green, Bob and Jim got good starts, got passed most of the sports racers with one between them and then everyone fell in behind Nick Majors.  Nick shot off into the distance eventually turning at least one lap in the 1:06 with Bob and Jim doing 1:10ís and 11ís.  Richard and Graham were having a good battle between themselves with a couple of sports racers thrown in for good measure.  Bob managed to keep a sports racer between himself and Jim who was showing a little smoke from the rear of the car but was still running a very quick 4th overall and 2nd in class.  The race finished with the F4 running order as Bob, Jim, Richard & Graham.  After the race Jim found the source of the smoke being oil escaping from the tank due to a loose cap but luckily the only issue was quite a mess for he and Devin to cleanup.  It was then off for a swim in the local lake and attend a wedding on the front straight for a couple of the long time MCO members and CASC tech people Mike Nilson and Mary McLure.

Race 2 (Sun)

Sunday dawned sunny but not so humid and was a perfect day for racing.  The first race was off at about 11am and the first corner was quite exciting with everyone trying to put big sports racers and little formula cars all into the same spot!!  Somehow everyone managed to squeeze through without any carnage and head off after Nick (as usual).  This time Jim got the jump on Bob at the start and the order for most of the race was 3 sports racers, Jim, a sports racer, Bob, a sports then Richard and Graham who were having another good scrap amongst themselves.  Jim really had his car working well all weekend and in this race he turned his best time of the weekend, a 1:09.810.  As it turned out, Jim and Bob were the fastest two cars of the meet after Nick Majorís sports racer.  As the race went on, Jim pulled away from Bob who had made up time on one of the radical sports racers only to have that car spring and oil leak for about 5 laps before finally expiring in a big way on the last lap.  We have lots of cleaning to do!!!  Richard and Graham keep up their battle for 3rd/4th in F4 with Richard finally coming out on top of this fight with Graham close behind.  This race finished with the F4ís in the order of Jim, Bob, Richard & Graham.
