Race Report Round 2 DAC Shannonville (Pro Track) May 28-29th - TQLA President Chris Haley

It looked like it was going to be another wet race weekend at Shannonville as it rained quite heavily on Friday night after we arrived just to add more water to an already swampy paddock area. As this was a one day event and Richard had encountered some running issues at the previous event, he decided to run the test day on the Friday to sort the car. Unfortunately part way through the day his running issues became terminal as the engine went onto 2 cylinders from the usual 3 and that was that for the weekend. Dinner and drinks were the order of evening for Friday and hoping that it would not rain too much on Saturday.

Saturday dawned cloudy and damp but luckily no rain so off they all went for practice and then qualifying. The track took a long time to dry out and two sections never did get rid of their river of water running across it. There were 3 F4s Jim, Graham and Mike along with a sports racer, an older ford, a Formula Mazda and a F2000 converted to a 1000cc Suzuki - that was the FLibre field. (As an aside the total car count for the whole weekend was only 49!!) Jim qualified quickest of the F4s with Mike next and then Graham.

Race 1 saw Jim head off to have a great race with Matt Graham in the Radical sports racer with Graham and Mike having a spirited battle behind that. Jim and Matt battled for the total 20 minutes (18 laps) with Jim holding Matt off for most of the race but eventually gave way to the Radical and finished 2nd overall and first in class. Graham was second in F4 with Mike third and suffering from a slipping clutch.

Race 2 was much the same as the first one with Matt getting the jump on Jim this time and the two of them then ran off and hid while having a great race. Mike had partially solved his clutch problem and he and Graham fought it out a slight way back until Graham had a half shaft break on lap 11 and that put paid to his weekend. Jim finished second overall and first in F4 with Mike taking second and Graham placing third having just completed enough laps to be classified.

Race 3 was anti-climatic as neither Matt nor Graham started the last race. Matt because his seat mount broke near the end of Race 2 and Graham due to the broken half shaft. Jim was first overall and first in F4 with Mike taking second in F4.

The next race is a one day event at Mosport on Sat July 2/11, so hope to see everyone there.

Chris
