Race Report Round 1 BEMC Mosport May
5-6th - TQLA President Chris
Well, the first event of 2012 is now
in the books and we couldn’t have asked for better
weather! We arrived at the track about 6pm on
Friday and as everyone has been saying, there have
been some major changes. The entrance to the track
has been changed completely and the new tunnel is
massive compared to the old one. (I will put some
pictures on the Website soon). Our usual camping
area is still untouched but there is now no access
through the gate at the fence and the road is now at
the bottom of the hill so it is much quieter up
there now. Jim, and Mike were there and Richard had
indicated he would arrive Sat morning which he did.
Some of us went down to the restaurant at the Port
Darlington Marina for dinner while others stayed at
the track and BBQ’d.
Saturday dawned cool but clear and
sunny and was just the precursor to a beautiful
overall weekend. Mike, Jim and Richard went out for
practice with all going fairly well other than Jim
saying he had some brake problems that ended up
plaguing him all weekend. Qualifying was next with
Jim, Mike and Richard in that order for F4. There
were 10 cars in the F-Libre class on Sat with the
Fords only having 9 and the vees 13.
Race 1 saw everyone scrambling off
into turn 1 & 2 alright but from there things went
downhill. Mike went up the inside of Catlin in her
Honda Fit powered Ford in 2 but she started to move
over, Mike got up on the curb a bit and the car
stepped out. He locked the brakes up but as he was
sliding across the track, Richard caught the right
front corner of Mike’s car with the left rear corner
of his and that was all she wrote for both of them.
Jim continued on to finish 1st in F4 and
5th overall. Both cars were repairable
but while Mike fixed his Richard decided that he
would roll his into the trailer and look at it next
week as he wasn’t sure exactly what all was damaged.
Saturday evening there was a surprise
50th birthday party for Steve Adams down
at the Britain West trailer after the races so we
all went down there to make fun of Steve and enjoy
the pasta and cake. Thanks very much to Penni and
family for the invitation.
Sunday was again a beautiful day with
sun and a light breeze. Jim and Mike both went out
for warmup to check there car with Mike feeling his
was fine but Jim still not happy with brakes and
seeming unable at the time to track down the
Race 1 on Sunday started with 7 F-Libre
cars as Mario went home for some reason, Richard
wasn’t running and Mike McNeil had a gearbox failure
in his F1000 during warmup. The race was fairly
uneventful but must have been conducive to good
traction as Jeremy Hill won the race in his F1000
with a new lap record (for him) of 1:18.2 and Jim
was first in F4 with a quick time of 1:25.891 (would
have been interesting to see what he would have
turned if he was happy with his brakes!). Mike was
second in F4.
Race 2 was also fairly quiet with
Jeremy and Mike both only ran to the 60% mark and
then brought the cars in rather than wearing them
out as they had no one to race with. Jim was
running with the Formula Mazda car but slower than
the first race as he was still having the brake
issues and was also having some problems with
gearbox in certain corners. Jim was first in F4
with Mike second.
The next race is at Shannonville May
26-27/12 so we hope to see everyone there.
